RUSSELLVILLE, AR- Several animal species are in danger because of the damage occurred after the oil spill produced by a failure at an Exxon pipeline near Conway. Organizations like the HAWK Center in Russellville, AR, a non-profit organization that works on funds and volunteers to take care of sick, injured, and orphan wild animals, are working to help cleaning the damaged species. Lynne Sliter, Executive Director and founder of HAWK Center said that the center had worked with eight birds as today, but they are expecting more patients. She also explained that the cleaning has to happen promptly; otherwise, the animals will absorb the petroleum into their skin.

Sliter also emphasized that the petroleum “is poison, and the animals will ingest it when they try to clean themselves up.” The team at HAWK Center is working hard to clean the birds; nevertheless, they only count with a few hands to help since only experts are working with the birds due to the chemical danger of the oil. Sliter stated that they were taking care of the animals as well as cleaning them; however, there is an organization specialized on bird response that will take care of the cleaning process and the HAWK Center will only work on the animal’s rehabilitation, which can take up to three weeks as the birds get their waterproofing back. In the meantime, the HAWK Center will keep cleaning and taking care of the affected birds. Volunteers at the Center are working hard to help the animals in need and all help is appreciated and needed. To make donations contact the organization at (479) 222-0528 for phone donations, checks can also be sent to: HAWK Center, PO Box 1922, Russellville, AR 72811-1922.
